Kyambura Gorge is situated in the Eastern corner of Queen Elizabeth National Parkcovered in deep lush tropical vegetation. It is home to a wide and large concentration of animal and bird species and specifically the Chimpanzees. The name Kyambura was derived from a tale where one time the river flooded and carried away the local people together with their property. However when it ceased raining, the survivors tried to follow the path of the river when the water had reduced with the hope of finding them but all in vain upon their return, they lamented in the native language “Kyambura” meaning “I couldn’t find it”.Chimpanzees are the main attraction in this gorge and the main focus for many that come to this area, the chimpanzees found at Kyambura Gorge are readily habituated and available for the ardent nature lovers to track them in their natural habitat. Chimpanzee trekking in the Kyambura gorge is done in two sessions, the morning session and afternoon session, and only persons 12 years and above are allowed to track the endangered species. The habituated group of chimpanzees can be visited/tracked through trails in the forest and the activity involves hiking and sloping through the gorge. The chimps can easily be located by their sound and you may closely approach them once you encounter them in the forest. You are then allowed one hour to watch them feeding, playing, and going about their daily life.During the chimpanzee trekking activity, you will get an opportunity to see other wildlife species such as; the Red-tailed monkey, black and white colobus monkey, vervet monkey, and baboons among others. For bird lovers, be sure to see new species of birds as you enter the gorge, look out for falcons, blue-headed bee-eater, black and white kingfisher, and many others.Other activities in the Kyambura gorge besides chimpanzee trekking include; nature walks, bird watching and wildlife viewing since the park is close to Queen Elizabeth national park.
