Gorilla Trekking Safari in Uganda

A Short Gorilla Trekking Safari : Uganda protects half of the world’s mountain gorillas. Gorilla trekking safaris in Uganda can be done in two national parks; Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga gorilla national park, all situated in the southwestern region of the country.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has four sectors where gorilla trekking can take place and these are; Rushaga, Nkuringo, Ruhija, and Buhoma, all with several gorillas families. Rushaga is the only sector with gorilla habituation where you get to spend the gorillas with more time. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park has one trailhead Ntebeko and it is the location of the park headquarters and the start of all park activities. The park has one habituated gorilla family. While visiting any of the mentioned parks, you encounter the world’s sought-after primates in their natural habitat and this is one of the top safari experiences in Africa.

For one to participate in the gorilla trekking or gorilla habituation activity, a gorilla permit is required and these are issued by Uganda Wildlife Authority or you can obtain one through a trusted, licensed, and registered company like Jewel safaris.

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Gorilla trekking requires getting up early enough. The activity starts with a briefing on the dos and don’ts of gorilla trekking. After the briefing, you are allocated a gorilla family to trek and then you head out to the forest. Gorilla trekking Safari involves hiking through the jungle in the company of an armed game ranger who keeps in touch with the monitoring team on the ground in order to easily locate the gorillas. The walk through the forest may take about 30 minutes to 4 hours depending on the location of the mountain gorillas. Once you encounter them, you are allocated 1 hour to watch them feed, play, and go about their daily activities. For those participating in the habituation process, they get to spend more time in the presence of the gentle giants. Gorilla trekking requires some physical fitness as it involves hiking through rugged terrain.
