Rwandan Culture and Traditions
Amasunzu
Amasunzu is a traditional Rwandan hairstyle that both men and women once wore. The unique style is created by cutting some of the hair sideways and braiding the top. A person with this hairstyle was identified as powerful, noble, prestigious, and brave. The Amasunzu hairstyle made a comeback in 2018 when Lupita Nyong’o wore it on the red carpet at the Oscars. Visit the King’s Palace and the Ethnographic Museum to learn more about Rwanda’s cultural heritage.
Intore Dancing
The finest displays of Rwanda’s dynamic traditional music and dance styles are performed by the Intore Dance Troupes. Founded several centuries ago, the Intore (The Chosen Ones) performed exclusively for the Royal Court. They received military training and were taught the technique of jumping, which forms a significant part of the dance. Performed while wearing grass wigs and clutching spears, this dance is a true spectacle of Rwanda’s heritage.
Live dance performances can be seen at cultural villages, museums, and as entertainment at many lodges and hotels across Rwanda. The Gorilla Guardians Village in Musanze and the National Museum of Rwanda regularly host performances.
Artisanal Crafts
Weaving and basket-making remain traditional arts in Rwanda. These crafts are used to create dry containers for storing food and medicines, also known as peace pots. These items hold cultural significance, often commemorating weddings or serving as welcome gifts.
Pottery is one of Rwanda’s oldest art forms, still practiced today using traditional Batwa techniques. Known for its high-quality clay, Rwandan pottery remains widely used for cooking and storing liquids.
Imigongo
A distinctively Rwandan craft, Imigongo is a form of cow dung painting produced by a local cooperative in the village of Nyakarambi near the border with Tanzania. Dominated by black, brown, and white whirls and geometric shapes, these unique and earthy artworks can be purchased in craft markets throughout the country.
Umuganda
Translated from Kinyarwanda as “coming together in common purpose to achieve an outcome,” Umuganda is a nationwide community service initiative. On the last Saturday of each month, Rwandans from all walks of life set aside their personal business for the morning to contribute to public works projects. These efforts include litter cleanup, tree planting, and building houses for the vulnerable. Shops close, buses stop running, and traffic disappears from the roads as people unite for the common good.
The social and economic benefits of Umuganda are evident—Rwanda is one of the cleanest countries in Africa. Visitors are warmly invited to participate, regardless of their skill level. With a wide range of projects, there is always an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the community.
