Gorilla tracking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is based in south western Uganda and it is the smallest national park in Uganda, gorilla tracking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is one of the desired tourist activities besides the unique golden monkey tracking, nature walks, hiking and visiting the local communities.
The park has only one gorilla family available for tracking and it is called Nyakagyezi gorilla family. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park attracts few visitors compared to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The park has availability of a limited number of permits (8); therefore, we encourage visitors planning a gorilla tracking safari in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park to book their permits way earlier in order to avoid disappointments. A gorilla tracking permit in Uganda costs $700 for foreign non-residents, $600 for foreign residents and UGX 250,000 for the East African Community.
The long-awaited day of the activity starts with an early breakfast (energize for the day’s activity), thereafter you head out for the briefing session at “Ntebeko”, the park headquarters. While here, you undergo an orientation on the different rules and regulations of gorilla tracking. The mountain gorillas in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park are easily located and this is because they play and feed from within a limited forested area. You are given 1 hour to watch the mountain gorillas in their natural habitat, learn about their distinctive characteristics and what they feed on. You are allowed to take photos of the gentle giants but without a flash because it may irritate or scare them off.
Inquire from the professional armed ranger guide for any information regarding the mountain gorillas and other unique species encountered during the walk-in forest.
Are you hoping to have an adventurous and successful gorilla tracking safari, plan to visit during the dry season when the forest trails are less muddy and can easily be navigated during the activity and also the flora is thin. Bare in mind that gorilla tracking can be demanding in terms of physical fitness and this is because of the location in which the mountain gorillas are sighted that day.
Tracking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is less strenuous compared to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
