Zambia Travel Tips

Zambia is a land of breathtaking natural beauty, abundant wildlife, and warm, welcoming people. From the thundering Victoria Falls to vast national parks teeming with game, the country offers countless adventures. To ensure a safe and enjoyable trip, here are some essential travel tips for Zambia.

Money and Spending in Zambia

Currency
The official currency of Zambia is the Zambian Kwacha (ZMW). However, US Dollars are widely accepted at lodges, hotels, and in many tourist areas. It’s advisable to carry smaller denominations of Kwacha for local transactions, especially in rural areas or for tipping.

If you plan on using credit cards, be aware that high commissions may be charged, especially around Victoria Falls. In addition, some remote lodges might experience difficulties processing card payments. Confirm payment methods with your lodge or safari operator before traveling.

Inclusive Safaris
Most Zambian safaris are fully inclusive, covering game drives, guided walks, meals, and drinks. However, premium alcoholic beverages and imported liquors are often excluded and charged separately.

Tipping in Zambia

Tipping is not mandatory but is a customary way to show appreciation for good service. Here’s a general guideline:

  • Safari staff: $10 per person per day for rangers and trackers, and $25 per day to be shared among lodge staff.
  • Restaurants: Some restaurants include a service charge in the bill. If not, leaving a 10% tip is standard practice.

For detailed tipping advice specific to your itinerary, consult your safari expert.

Zambia’s Climate

  • Summer temperatures: 17°C to 31°C (63°F to 88°F)
  • Winter temperatures: 9°C to 23°C (48°F to 73°F)
  • Rainy season: November to April

For optimal wildlife viewing and comfortable weather, consult a climate chart or a travel expert to determine the best time to visit.

What to Pack for Your Safari

  • Clothing: Opt for lightweight, loose-fitting clothes in natural fabrics like cotton or linen. Bring a fleece or jacket for chilly evenings and mornings.
  • Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes are a must, especially for Zambia’s renowned walking safaris.
  • Sun Protection: A wide-brimmed hat or cap, sunglasses, and sunscreen are essential.
  • Rain Gear: Pack a raincoat or poncho if visiting during the rainy season – downpours are heavy but brief.
  • Colors for Safaris: Stick to neutral tones like khaki, olive, and brown for game drives to blend into the environment and avoid attracting tsetse flies. Avoid white (gets dusty), black, and dark blue (attracts insects).

Cultural Considerations: Zambia is conservative, especially in towns. Women are advised to pack knee-length or longer skirts and avoid revealing clothing.

Flights and Getting Around

  • Major Airports:
    • Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (Lusaka): Zambia’s main international gateway, located 14km from the capital. It’s serviced by direct flights from several cities and connections via Johannesburg.
    • Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport (Livingstone): Convenient for visitors to Victoria Falls, with flights from Lusaka and Johannesburg.
  • Domestic Travel:
Due to the vast distances between Zambia’s parks and limited infrastructure, the easiest way to travel is by light aircraft charters. Transfers within parks are conducted in open-sided 4×4 vehicles.

Important Note: Domestic flights often have strict luggage limits of 12kg (26lbs) per person in soft-sided bags. Even semi-hard bags may be refused, so pack accordingly.

Visa and Passport Requirements

All visitors must have a passport valid for at least six months from their departure date. Visa requirements vary by nationality:

  • South African and Zimbabwean citizens: Free visa on arrival.
  • Other nationalities: Tourist visas are available at major borders, airports, and seaports.

Visa Types:

  • 7-day transit visa
  • Single-entry visa
  • Double-entry visa
  • Multiple-entry visa

Consider the KAZA Univisa if planning to visit neighboring countries like Zimbabwe and Botswana.

By preparing with these tips, you can enjoy Zambia’s incredible landscapes, vibrant culture, and thrilling wildlife encounters with ease.
