Overview of the suggested Zambia safari lodges and activities: Experience the best of South Luangwa with three camps owned and operated by one of our favourite companies, Robin Pope Safaris. At each camp, you’ll enjoy exceptional game drives and unforgettable walking safaris.
Your journey begins in the game-rich Mfuwe area, renowned for its abundant leopard sightings. From there, you’ll head to the more remote ‘bush camp’ experience for which the Luangwa is famous.
In Mfuwe, you’ll stay at Nkwali Camp, located just outside South Luangwa NP. It offers a fantastic introduction to safari at great value. Next, head to Nsefu Camp in the Nsefu sector of the park. As the oldest camp in South Luangwa, Nsefu is known for its distinctive rondavel rooms. Your final stop is Tena Tena, also in Nsefu. This is the most adventurous of the three camps, offering a thrilling yet comfortable stay. The guiding across all three camps is second to none.
Who is this Zambia trip for? This itinerary is designed and priced with couples and honeymooners in mind (two adults travelling together). However, every trip is tailor-made to suit your preferences. If you’re travelling as a group or family, we can adjust accommodations and itineraries based on your needs. After discussing your preferences, we can modify the itinerary and adjust the length of your stay accordingly—it’s all about crafting the perfect experience for you!
Days 1–3 SOUTH LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK
On Day 1 of your journey, you’ll fly into Mfuwe for two nights at Nkwali Camp. Nestled within a private reserve along the banks of the River Luangwa, this charming camp is owned and operated by the renowned Robin Pope Safaris. The main communal areas are housed in an open-sided structure made of timber, stone, and thatch, offering a welcoming atmosphere and stunning views of the river. You’ll also find a thatched dining area and a large swimming pool perfect for relaxing after your adventures.
Accommodation at Nkwali consists of six bamboo-and-thatch chalets, each featuring en-suite facilities and spectacular river views. The chalets are open-fronted, allowing you to enjoy the sights of elephants crossing the river and drinking from your room’s comfortable setting. The area around the camp is often visited by lion, leopard, and wild dog, so keep your eyes peeled. For an even more rewarding experience, take a game drive or a walking safari to discover an abundance of wildlife, including over 450 species of birds. Other activities include a visit to the local market and a cultural village tour, providing a rich experience of the area’s culture and surroundings.
Days 3–6 SOUTH LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK
The second part of your adventure takes you to Nsefu Camp, set on a sweeping meander of the river and offering breathtaking views. As the oldest camp in South Luangwa, Nsefu is steeped in history and charm, creating an unforgettable atmosphere. The rustic communal lodge is positioned next to a towering termite mound, adding to the unique character of the camp. Inside, you’ll find a comfortable lounge and bar area, perfect for relaxing and socializing with fellow guests. Additionally, a hide located just a short distance from the lodge allows for close-up wildlife viewing.
Accommodation at Nsefu consists of six charming rondavels (round huts), built from concrete with simple yet appealing interiors. These rooms provide a cozy and authentic safari experience. Activities at the camp include both day and night game drives, as well as walking safaris, allowing you to explore the wilderness from multiple perspectives. The area is home to abundant wildlife, with sightings of lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, hippo, and an impressive variety of bird species.
Days 6-9 SOUTH LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK
For the final part of your trip, you will transfer by road to Tena Tena, located in the heart of Nsefu and just a stone’s throw from the river. As the first property in Robin Pope Safaris’ portfolio, Tena Tena holds a special place in the company’s history. The camp is set in an area of Nsefu rich in wildlife, offering an exciting and adventurous atmosphere. The main areas are housed under canvas, with a large marquee supported by tree trunks and poles. This unique structure creates a cozy yet spacious environment, with two comfortable seating areas and an all-day bar for relaxing after safari activities. A secondary seating area, set near the river, offers an excellent vantage point for watching the wildlife that frequents the area.
The five guest tents at Tena Tena are connected by sandy paths and provide lovely river views. These tents strike a perfect balance between authenticity and comfort, with everything you need for a memorable stay. We particularly love the open-air en-suite shower rooms, which bring you closer to nature. Activities at Tena Tena include day and night game drives, walking safaris, and excursions to the nearby village, offering a well-rounded and immersive safari experience.
