Shetani lava flows is the only site where to-date the magma that was forced onto the earth’s surface is seen. About 4km west of the Chyulu gate of Tsavo West National Park, on the road to Amboseli, are the spectacular Shetani lava flows. ‘Shetani’ means ‘devil’ in Kiswahili. The flows were formed only a few hundred years ago and local people believed that it was the devil himself emerging from the earth. This vast expanse of folded black lava spreads for 50 sq. km across the savannah near the Chyulu Hills, looking strangely as if Vesuvius dropped its comfort blanket here. The last major eruption here is believed to have taken place around 200 years ago, but there are still few plants among the cinders. You can now possibly follow the lava flows back from the Amboseli–Tsavo West road to the ruined cinder cone of Shetani. The views are spectacular and magnificently full of wildlife. Adjacent are the Shetani caves, which are also a result of vulcanicity. There is a lot of darkness in the caves and you will therefore need a flashlight to show way while exploring. Also watch your steps as the lower rocks are like razor-sharp rocks and keep an eye on the local fauna – rumour has it that the caves are sometimes inhabited by hyenas. This geologically-scenic formation with uneven black magma chunks and a dark cave with razor sharp rocks are found in the western part of Tsavo National Park. While on your Kenyan Wildlife Safari, please don’t forget to visit Tsavo National Park and reach to the Shetani lava flows. You will be amazed by the scenic views here. Do not hesitate to contact Jewel Safaris for your tailor-made itinerary and quote.
