The feel of testing the untold great encounter with the mountain gorillas of the only existing habituated gorilla family of this small but well-endowed national park.Nyakagezi Gorilla Family is the only habituated gorilla group in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park; located at the Rwanda-Uganda-DR. Congo border in South Western Uganda.Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the smallest park, covering an area of 33.7 km2. This is an extension of the Virunga Mountains which is shared by two other gorilla parks of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in Democratic Republic of Congo. The group is named after “Nyakagezi” area in the Mgahinga where the group spends much of its time. The area is highly endowed with food which attracts very many gorillas to come. The family group is led silverback Mark. Other members of the family include silverback Mafia, Ndugutse and Bugingo-the former head of the family. Rukundo is the only black-back, Nyiramwiza an adult female, Nshuti the adult female with her two babies Nshuti and Fred. Nkanda and Furaha are juveniles, Mutagamba is an infant. Fred was named from a Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project (MGVP) doctor called “Fred” who saved him from a wire snare.Bugingo is said to be the oldest Silverback in the group and estimated to be around 53 years of age and still happily lives together in the family with other silverbacks.Usually in the gorilla community, any overthrown silverback resorts to being a loner gorilla who sometimes may abandon the family for good for example silverback Ruhondozo who was ousted from power in the Mubare group left and started living in the neighbouring Rubona village until the time of his death in 2012 in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda.Mgahinga Gorilla National Park has approximately 80 mountain gorillas but Nyakagezi is the only habituated gorilla family in the park. This is the second national park in Uganda hosting the mountain gorillas thus giving you more chances of encountering with the mountain gorillas while in Uganda.Gorillas in the Virunga massif keep on inter-crossing the borders. This at times hardens the mountain gorillas tracking experience. The Nyakagezi gorilla family group usually visits Rwanda and D.R Congo.Nyakagezi gorilla family group is considered the easiest group to track because it is found in areas of lower altitude and live in a small home range for resting, nesting and feeding. In case all the Bwindi gorilla trekking permits are sold out, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park assures you of 8 more gorilla trekking permits for tracking Nyakagezi gorilla family.
