Namibia Travel Advice

For the most up-to-date and reliable travel advice, Go2Africa offers expert insights to help you make the most of your Namibia trip.

Money & Spending

The Namibian Dollar (NAD) is pegged to the South African Rand (ZAR), but if you’ve traveled through South Africa, you can use either currency in shops, lodges, markets, and restaurants in Namibia. However, note that the Namibian Dollar is not accepted in South Africa.

Visa and Mastercard credit cards are widely accepted, though travelers with other cards should confirm whether they are usable. Self-drivers should be aware that credit cards are not accepted at petrol stations.

Tipping

Tipping is expected for good service in upscale tourist establishments, but it’s officially prohibited in national parks and reserves. A service charge is typically included in restaurant bills, but if not, a 10% tip is standard for satisfactory service.

What to Pack

Temperatures in Namibia can vary by region and season, but generally, days are hot while nights can get unexpectedly chilly. Layering is essential for a Namibia safari. During the day, wear cool, cotton fabrics in neutral colors, and bring a fleece or jacket for early morning and evening game drives. Comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots are a must.

Flights & Getting Around

Did you know you can book your flights through Go2Africa? For more details, visit our Flights section.

  • Hosea Kutako International Airport: Windhoek’s main airport serves as the international gateway. For destinations further afield, transfer to Eros Airport for charter flights on light aircraft.
  • Walvis Bay Airport: Located 15 km east of Walvis Bay, this airport offers easy access to Swakopmund and the Skeleton Coast.

Transfers and game drives are typically conducted in open-sided 4X4 vehicles. With Namibia’s excellent infrastructure, many visitors choose to hire a car for a self-drive holiday, giving them independence while following a planned itinerary. Self-drivers at private reserves can join guided game drives in 4X4s with other guests.

Visa & Passport Requirements

Visitors must have a passport valid for at least six months from the date of entry. No visa is required for citizens of the USA, UK, most European countries (including France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Belgium, Spain, and Switzerland), Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Malaysia, Japan, and Singapore. Travelers receive 90 days of entry, and onward travel visas can be obtained in Windhoek.

For visitors from other countries, please check with your nearest Namibian Consulate for visa requirements.
