Namibia Wildlife, Himbas & Dunes 10 Days

Overview

Namibia is truly a hidden gem, bordered by the ever-changing Atlantic Ocean that brings cool air to the arid Namib Desert, home to an array of life. This captivating country is known for its ‘fairy circles’, towering sand dunes, big game, breathtaking stargazing, and cities that blend African and European cultures.

With its vastness – about the size of France and Germany combined and a population of just two million – one of the best ways to explore Namibia is by air. From above, you’ll witness an incredible palette of browns, khakis, golds, and reds, which shift into lush plains and greenery as you approach the world-renowned Etosha National Park, located near the capital, Windhoek. Known for its big game and over 300 bird species, Etosha is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts.

Next, fly to the Marianfluss Valley near the Kunene River, home to the Himba people and the mysterious ‘fairy circles’—perfectly round patches where nothing grows. Take a stop in the Twyfelfontein Conservancy, before concluding your Namibian journey at the iconic Sossusvlei, famed for its red sand dunes and the striking ‘Dead Vlei’.

This adventure is ideal for those seeking to venture off the beaten path or those who crave solitude amidst nature. Namibia rewards those who embrace its vast, open spaces and stunning landscapes, offering a safari experience like no other.

Highlights & Activities

  • Visit a traditional Himba village
  • See the ‘fairy circles’ of Marianfluss
  • Exciting game drives in Etosha National Park
  • Germany-meets-Africa in Swakopmund
  • Ancient San rock art at Twyfelfontein
  • Summit the dunes of Sossusvlei

Day 1-2: Big Game Thrills at Etosha  | 2 Nights

Arrive in Namibia at Windhoek International Airport, where you’ll be warmly welcomed before being transferred to Windhoek Eros Airport for a short flight to Etosha National Park. Upon arrival at the Mokuti Airstrip, you’ll be taken to Onguma – The Fort, your base for the next two nights. Etosha, established in 1907, is a vast expanse of savannah and immense dry pans, home to a remarkable variety of wildlife, including over 300 bird species and at least 144 mammal species.

Maximize your wildlife viewing opportunities with half-day drives through the park’s immense landscapes, thrilling night drives where you’ll heighten your senses to spot nocturnal creatures, and guided walks that will introduce you to the fascinating insects, plants, flowers, and birds that call this place home. Keep an eye out for the park’s unique elephants—among the largest in Africa, yet with smaller tusks due to a mineral-deficient diet and genetic mutations. The region is also famous for its endangered black rhino and black-faced impala populations.

Day 3-4: Fair Circles in the Sands | 2 Nights

This morning, say farewell to Onguma – The Fort and Etosha, as you take a flight to the mystical Marianfluss Mountains, deep in Namibia’s Hartmann Valley, the northernmost part of the country and home to the Himba people. Your next stop is Serra Cafema Camp, nestled on the banks of the Kunene River, which forms the border between Angola and Namibia. The camp offers breathtaking views from its tents, with the river stretching out before you.

Spend your day unwinding by the poolside or lounging in the camp’s lounge. A visit to a nearby Himba village provides a chance to immerse yourself in their rich culture and learn how they have adapted to the harsh environment. For birdwatching enthusiasts, the boat-based birding along the Kunene is exceptional, and you may even spot a crocodile sharing the river with you.

Quad biking excursions.

For those looking for adventure, lace up your hiking boots for a walking safari through the valley, or embark on a search for Marianfluss’s intriguing ‘fairy circles’. These mysterious, circular patches of ground where nothing grows create a surreal, polka-dot pattern across the landscape, which looks even more striking from a scenic chartered flight.

Day 5-6 : Uncover the Kaokoveld  | 2 Nights

After breakfast at Serra Cafema, you’ll be flown to the remote north-western region of Namibia, where Okahirongo Elephant Lodge in the heart of the Kaokoveld will be your base for the next two nights.

The lodge offers uniquely decorated cottages, each reflecting a vibrant blend of African colors. From your accommodation, enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. Whether you choose to relax by the swimming pool, unwind with a book in the cool library, or take in the tranquil atmosphere from one of the two open-air lounges, there’s no shortage of peaceful spots to enjoy. For a little extra indulgence, treat yourself to a soothing body massage. Each day brings a new menu, offering a delicious fusion of Italian and African cuisine, with dinner served either in one of the two elegant dining rooms or under the stars in a traditional fire-lit ‘boma’.

Take in the exquisite views from the comfort of the shaded daybeds. | Okahirongo Elephant Lodge

The Kaokoveld is a unique destination, where desert-adapted wildlife, including elephants, black rhinos, giraffes, and lions, roam freely. Elephant tracking offers a thrilling and insightful way to connect with this remarkable environment and its resilient wildlife.

Day 7: Place of God, Damarland

After a leisurely breakfast, you’ll take a scenic flight to Damaraland, landing at Mowani Mountain Camp, located in the heart of the Twyfelfontein Conservancy between the Ugab and Huab rivers. The name *Mowani*, meaning “the place of god,” perfectly captures the spiritual and awe-inspiring atmosphere of this exceptional location.

The pool deck at Mowani Mountain Camp is nestled between boulders, offering the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a refreshing drink while soaking up the warm African sun. After lunch, embark on a journey to the ancient rock engravings of Twyfelfontein, a UNESCO World Heritage Site showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the area.

Enjoy the views near Mowani Mountain Camp.

As the sun sets, enjoy a sundowner at the camp before settling down for a delicious dinner. Your luxury tent, elegantly decorated in East African style, offers a peaceful and comfortable retreat, ensuring a restful night’s sleep under the stars.

Day 8-9: Unwind at Sossusvlei

A charter flight whisks you away to the charming Germanic coastal town of Swakopmund, where you’ll enjoy a leisurely lunch before taking a quick flight to your next destination: Sossusvlei Desert Lodge, nestled in the heart of the vast Namib-Naukluft Reserve.

At Sossusvlei Desert Lodge, you’ll experience the desert landscape in complete comfort and style. The lodge’s design is minimalist yet sophisticated, blending harmoniously with the natural surroundings and emphasizing the solitude and beauty of the desert. You can enjoy a refreshing drink at the bar or unwind on the sundowner deck before heading to your suite. Each suite features expansive, furnished patios with a private plunge pool, and a skylight above the bed allows you to stargaze before drifting off to sleep.

The following day, embark on a journey to explore the unique Namib-Naukluft. Your morning and afternoon excursions by 4×4 will take you across endless grassy plains and awe-inspiring mountain formations. Discover the ancient hunting grounds of the indigenous San people and spot desert wildlife, both large and small. Feed your soul with the tranquility of the clear skies, vast desert plains, and unspoiled wilderness.

For a truly memorable experience, take a trip to Sossusvlei where you can climb the towering Big Daddy dune or visit Deadvlei, a hauntingly beautiful clay pan dotted with the skeletal remains of ancient acacia trees set against the vibrant orange dunes. For those seeking a bit of adventure, ATV rides and hot-air balloon trips are also available, and should be booked in advance.

Jewel Safaris has a jewel in a female driver, Rachel My trip to Lake Mburo National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park on 5th Jan 2024, could not have gone better. My great experience was all down to Jewel Safaris' professionalism and industry experience. The car arrived at my house on time (5 am) to pick me up for the trip. The tour guide driver, a lady named Rachel Aheebwa, was such a delight. Female tour guides drivers are so rare, so this was unexpected. But looking back at how much of a success my tour went, Rachel was the best part of the trip. Two hours into the drive, she suggested a breakfast place that turned out to serve the best coffee I'd ever taken. The small eatery happened to be ran by a lady with tourism experience of 17 years. We set off for Lake Mburo about an hour later and arrived at the park gate three hours later. Because we planned to sleep in Queen Elizabeth National Park and we still had hundreds of kilometers to cover, she made sure we wasted no time Mburo. She was always friendly and firm in her advice when it came to time keeping. We made it to our final destination before dark and had time to rest. Before going to bed, she told me, firmly that we must leave at 7 if we are to see all the animals we wanted to see. I would have loved to sleep in but she made it clear that this was not an option. I was later thankful for this. There were several tourist vehicles at the UWA offices when we arrived. After payments, all the cars left through a Northwards track but Rachel went Eastwards and in less than thirty minutes of Game driving, we hit a jack pot. We found lions on the road and I was able to take close up pictures for several minutes as she made calls to all her friends letting them know that she had found lions. By the time all the vehicles crowded around the lions, I had spend over half an an hour with them. One of the best moments of my life. Jewel safaris couldn't have chosen a better tour guide driver for me. Every thing was well planned to help me see all there was to be seen.

Murchison Falls Adventure This was my first safari adventure and it was a trip of a lifetime. The owner, Dona was very professional and helpful and made sure he understood what we wanted. The vehicle was wonderful and roomy and well kept. Our guide, Patrick made the trip exceptional. He knew the park, he knew the animals and he was a former ranger who spent years protecting the animals of that park. It was clear that the other guides respected him and Patrick was kind, funny and made sure we had a wonderful adventure. The first night, the owner called me to ask how everything was going and he messaged me after the trip to make sure we had a great time. That was above and beyond what I expected. Great company, great customer service and fantastic guide with years of experience. This is the company I would choose over and over.

Two-day trip to Lake Mburo Our two-day trip to Lake Mburo with our driver and guide Patrick was great. He delivered what we asked for, and more! Other than being a very kind person and good driver, Patrick was able to share a lot of information about the different animals and places we encountered. A big thanks to Jewel Safaris and Patrick! 100% Recommend!

Great agency We ordered the trip in 2019 to go to Uganda in April 2020. Then Covid came and the trip was postponed for 2,5 yrs and in the meantime we kept contact and When we finally could go it all went super-smooth. Well organized and very friendly personnel and a fantastic guide. Nothing went wrong during the 10 days we visited and the arrangements were spotless.
