After four nights of rail luxury, take to the skies for a scenic flight to Sossusvlei, where a night in the heart of the desert awaits, complete with towering sand dunes. Returning to Windhoek, the train continues northward, pausing for thrilling game drives at the renowned Etosha National Park. Spend a night at Etosha Safari Lodge before rejoining the train for the final leg to the Atlantic coast. The adventure concludes in the seaside haven of Walvis Bay, a fitting finale to an extraordinary exploration of stunning landscapes and cultural wonders.

Day 1: Start Your Journry in a Luxury Rovos Train

Set off from Pretoria’s Capital Park Station in the late afternoon, stepping into the golden age of luxury rail travel. Feel the thrill as a historic steam locomotive pulls the train through some of Southern Africa’s most scenic and storied landscapes. Savor a sumptuous 3-course dinner in the elegant oak-paneled dining car, where formal attire enhances the timeless ambiance of the evening. The journey takes you southward, tracing the path of the legendary gold fields of the Witwatersrand.

Day 2: Explore Kimberly and Big

This morning, you will arrive in the famous diamond-mining town of Kimberley for a brief morning excursion to the Big Hole Diamond Mine. Head back to the train before lunch to continue your journey through the Karoo semi-desert to Upington.

Day 3: Explore Namibia

Start your morning with an optional walking tour of Upington, a charming South African town with roots as a mission station along the Orange River. Rejoin the train in the late morning as it heads toward the Namibian border.

Following border formalities at Nakop, the journey continues to Holoog Siding, near the iconic Fish River Canyon. Spend a relaxing evening aboard the train before setting off the next morning to explore the canyon’s breathtaking vistas.

Day 4: Discover The Fish River Canyon

Begin your morning with an unforgettable excursion to the awe-inspiring Fish River Canyon, the world’s second-largest canyon. Stand at its edge and take in the breathtaking scale of this remarkable geological wonder.

Afterward, enjoy a delightful lunch before returning to the train to continue the journey to Windhoek via Keetmanshoop. As the train traverses the Kalahari Desert, explore Garas Park, home to two unique attractions: the Quiver Tree Forest and Giant’s Playground.

Day 5-6: The Dunes of Sossusvlei

Arrive in Windhoek, a vibrant city with a cosmopolitan atmosphere and a distinct German influence. Embark on a brief city tour to explore the highlights of Namibia’s capital.

After the tour, board a light aircraft for a short flight to the renowned Sossusvlei sand dunes. In the afternoon, take a scenic drive to admire the rugged landscapes and towering mountains, followed by a memorable bush dinner under the stars.

Rise early for an excursion to witness some of the world’s tallest sand dunes in the Sossusvlei region, accompanied by a delightful breakfast. Later, enjoy stunning aerial views of this picturesque area as you fly back to Windhoek to rejoin the train, continuing your journey northward to Etosha National Park.

Day 7: Cheetah Conservation Project

After savoring a delightful lunch in the elegant dining cars, arrive at a stop where you’ll take a scenic one-hour road transfer to a cheetah conservation project in Otjiwarongo. Established in 1990, the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) is committed to protecting cheetahs in the wild, addressing threats like habitat loss and the illegal pet trade.

Spend the afternoon gaining insight into their vital conservation work before returning to the train. As the journey resumes, indulge in another exquisite multi-course dinner aboard the luxurious Rovos Rail.

Day 8: Arrive at Etosha

On arrival in the late morning, you will be transferred to your lodge in time for lunch in the game-rich Etosha National Park. You will then have some time to relax at the lodge and settle into your suite before being taken out on a game drive.

Day 9: Aiming the Atlantic

You will start your day early with a game drive in Etosha before heading back to the train for lunch as the train makes its way to the Atlantic Ocean.

Day 10: End of Journey in Walvis Bay

Arrive in Walvis Bay – set between the dunes of the Namib Desert and the roaring Atlantic – where your elegant rail journey comes to an end.
