Lokobe National Park

Lokobe National Park, located on the picturesque Nosy Be island in Madagascar, is renowned for its rare panther chameleons and black lemurs. Enveloped by an old-growth forest filled with ancient endemic tree species, this unspoiled gem is a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts. Spanning seven and a half square kilometers, the park also features a marine reserve of just over one kilometer.

The Lokobe forest represents the last remaining primary rainforest on Nosy Be island. Its untamed landscape boasts a rich tapestry of ylang-ylang, orchids, palm trees, and lush ferns, interwoven with expansive rainforests that create a haven for diverse wildlife. The park’s unique charm lies in its pristine forest bordering the coral-rich shoreline.

Visitors can only reach the national park by traditional pirogues, and exploring this untamed wilderness requires booking an experienced guide in advance. The island of Nosy Be is well-equipped for tourism, offering excellent infrastructure. Lokobe is situated in the southeastern part of the island, approximately seven kilometers from Nosy Be’s capital, Andoany, which is home to an airport.

Wildlife

Lokobe National Park is a haven for nature enthusiasts eager to encounter rare wildlife. The park’s flagship species is the black lemur, while the elusive panther chameleon stands out as one of its rarest inhabitants. Visitors may also spot the Hawk’s sportive lemur and the nocturnal mouse lemur in this remarkable region.

This tropical rainforest serves as a sanctuary for an incredible array of wildlife, hosting 84 reptile species, 11 primate species, 16 bat species, and over 42 bird species. Birdwatchers can look forward to sightings of the African palm swift, the Madagascar owl, and the pygmy kingfisher. On the forest floor, visitors often glimpse bright green geckos, plated lizards, and impressive boa constrictors. The moisture-rich environment also supports a thriving population of amphibians, including the endemic Rhombophryne frog, also known as the diamond frog.

Best time to visit

Nosy Be is a year-round destination with consistently warm temperatures. The island benefits from a sheltered location and does not experience monsoon conditions. While there is a rainy season from December to March, the rainfall is generally light. The period from April to November is considered an excellent time to visit, offering ideal weather for exploring the island and its attractions.
