14 Days Rwanda Safari

14 days Rwanda safari will start and end in Kigali during the tour, you will engage in a city tour around Kigali, visit Akagera national park for game drives and a boat cruise on Lake Ihema, visit Nyamata village, engage in a chimpanzee trek, canopy walk in Nyungwe national park as well as visiting the Isumo waterfall and touring the Gisakura tea estate.

During the safari you will also visit Iby’iwacu village, engage in golden monkey trekking in Volcanoes national park and drive to Bwindi national park in Uganda for gorilla trekking. You will also visit Lake Bunyonyi during the tour.

Detailed itinerary: 14 Days Rwanda safari

Day 1; Arrival

Your guide will pick you up from Kigali airport and welcome you for the safari. You will proceed to the hotel for check-in and spend the night.

Day 2; Kigali city tour

After breakfast at the hotel in Kigali, you will engage in a city tour around Kigali and visit the genocide memorial sites, Kigali convention center, Kimironko market, and other places in the city.

You will also get to taste the Kinyarwanda food for lunch at a local restaurant as you experience the beauty of Rwanda which is also known as the land of a thousand hills.

Day 3; transfer to Akagera national park

You will have breakfast served at the hotel in Kigali and your guide will pick you up to begin the journey to Akagera national park which takes about 2 to 3 hours. On arrival at Akagera national park, you will be driven to the lodge where you will also check in and have lunch.

After your lunch, you will engage in an afternoon game drive in Akagera national park and search for wildlife species such as zebras, buffalos, giraffes, elephants, and many others. You will later return to the lodge to relax and prepare for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 4; game drives and Lake Ihema boat cruise

Your breakfast will be served early at the lodge and your guide will pick you up for a morning game drive in Akagera national park to look out for different wildlife species in the savannah and also enjoy watching the sunrise. You will also see different bird species during your safari in the national park.

After having lunch, you will also engage in a boat cruise on Lake Ihema and enjoy seeing more wildlife species such as hippos in the water, Nile crocodiles, and many birds. After the boat cruise, you will return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 5; drive to Kigali and visit Nyamata village

You will have breakfast early at the lodge and check out as you prepare for your drive from Akagera national park to Kigali city.

You will check in at the hotel in Kigali and later visit the reconciliation village in Nyamata which is about 45 minute drive from Kigali. In this village, people who carried out genocide and people who were affected by the genocide live together and you will also get to hear their stories about reconciliation. After this experience, you will return to the hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 6; drive to Nyungwe national park via Butare

After breakfast early at the hotel in Kigali, you will prepare for the journey to Nyungwe national park which takes about 5 to 6 hours. You will have a stop at Butare where you will visit the museum and also the king’s palace after this experience, your guide will drive you to the lodge for check-in and dinner, and an overnight stay.

Day 7; chimpanzee trekking and canopy walk

You will wake up early and after breakfast, you will proceed to the park headquarters in Nyungwe national park for a briefing on chimpanzee trekking. After the briefing, you will proceed into the forest with ranger guides to start your search for the chimpanzees in Nyungwe forest which is a montane rainforest. You will spend time with the chimpanzees in Nyungwe forest as you enjoy taking photos and observing their behavior and after the chimpanzee trekking activity, you will return to the briefing point.

After lunch, you will engage in a canopy walk in Nyungwe forest along a bridge suspended about 9 meters off the ground during this experience you will enjoy views of the forest and the national park and later return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 8; visit Isumo waterfall and tea plantation tour

After having breakfast at the lodge, you will visit the Isumo waterfalls this activity involves hiking and takes about 4 to 5 hours. You will enjoy beautiful views as you hike through tea plantations to the waterfalls.

You will return to the lodge for lunch after the waterfall tour and later engage in a tea plantation tour at the Gisakura tea estate. During this activity, you will learn the process of tea planting and processing and also enjoy picking tea leaves on the plantation and also taste the tea grown from the plantation. After this tour, your guide will drive you back to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 9; drive to Volcanoes national park and visit Iby’wacu village

After breakfast at the lodge, you will check out and prepare for your journey from Nyungwe national park to Volcanoes national park which is the home to gorillas in Rwanda.

You will also visit the Iby’wacu village where you will enjoy traditional dance performances, and interact with the locals. This village is also known as the gorilla guardian’s village and you will experience the culture of the people of Rwanda when you visit here. After this cultural experience, you will be driven to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 10; golden monkey trekking

You will wake up early for breakfast at the lodge and you will proceed to the park headquarters in Volcanoes national park for a briefing on golden monkey trekking. You will search for the golden monkeys with the ranger guides and also spend time with them in their natural habitat. You will encounter other primates during the activity such as red-tailed monkeys and also see different bird species.

After the golden monkey experience, you will return to the lodge to relax and spend the rest of the evening at the lodge.

Day 11; drive to Bwindi national park via the Cyanika border

Your breakfast will be served at the lodge and after checking out, your guide will drive you from Volcanoes national park to Bwindi national park via the Cyanika border.

Day 12; Bwindi gorilla trekking and optional cultural tour

After a cup of locally brewed coffee or tea at the lodge you will proceed to the park headquarters about 10 minutes from the lodge for a briefing on gorilla trekking. You will be divided into groups of 8 to trek with a gorilla family and with your ranger guide, you will proceed to trek into Bwindi forest to search for the gorillas. You will move through the tall trees and see different bird species and when you encounter the gorillas you will spend one hour with them recording videos and taking pictures. After the 1 hour with the gorillas, you will trek back to the park headquarters to receive certificates.

You will also have an optional cultural tour and interact with the Batwa people and you will later return to the lodge.

Day 13; drive to Lake Bunyonyi

Your breakfast will be served at the lodge in Bwindi national park and after check out, you will start your journey to Lake Bunyonyi which is the deepest lake in Uganda. This lake has numerous islands and also has beautiful scenery.

After arriving at the hotel in Lake Bunyonyi, you will engage in a boat ride to visit the islands of Lake Bunyonyi with your local guide who will tell you stories about the islands and their people as well as more information about the lake and spend the rest of the day relaxing by the water shores.

Day 14; drive to Kigali

On the last day of the safari, you will check out of the hotel and your guide will drive you back to Kigali you will be dropped off at the Kigali airport which will bring the 14 days tour to an end.
