Rhino Tracking in Uganda
Rhino tracking in Uganda is a magical experience of walking in the wilderness with trained and knowledgeable rangers as they help to ensure the safety of tourists from this rare and critically endangered species. It involves watching Rhinos in their natural habitat. Rhino tracking is only done in Zziwa Rhino Sanctuary. Zziwa Rhino Sanctuary is the only place in East Africa where you can track Rhinos on foot and see them in the wild. Rhinos move freely on around 7000 hectares of land and presently it is home to over 32 southern white Rhinos. The Wild Life Authority and the Rhino Fund Uganda collaborated on the Rhino Reintroduction effort so as to prevent the extinction of Southern white rhinos which were hunted down by poachers and killed in Kidepo national park and Murchison falls National Park. Zziwa Rhino Sanctuary is located in Nakitoma, Nakasongola district on the Gulu highway towards Murchison falls. When you arrive at Zziwa Sanctuary, report for Rhino tracking activity to the sanctuary headquarters for briefing from guides. The guides provide all the necessary information needed including what to wear such as a good pair of Hiking shoes, Long pants, insect repellent cream to keep the insects away from you and also you can carry a portable camera for taking pictures then after being told about the dos, the visitors begin to track the rhinos through the savannah vegetation. The Southern white rhinos at Zziwa rhino sanctuary are not violent, aggressive while the Black rhinos are aggressive. The activity can take between 1 hour and 30 minutes or 2 hours and 30 minutes depending on your physical fitness. The dry season is the best for rhino tracking and the best time to carry out the activity is in the morning hours from 8 am to 10 am but you can also decide to carry out rhino tracking in the late afternoon from 4 pm to 6 pm. Rhino tracking in Uganda is exciting, and refreshing since it is a guided nature walk that offers scenic sights and ambient sounds of the Zziwa rhino sanctuary. As you track you have a chance to set your eyes on over 300 bird species and plenty of mammals such as Chameleons, antelopes, hippos, monkeys, and crocodiles among other animals. Rhino trekking in Uganda costs over 50 USD for Nonresidents adults,25USD for children, 40 USD for East African residents’ adults, 20 USD for children, 30,000UGX for Ugandan adult residents, and 10,000UGX for children. Rhino tracks have big middle-toe forms for the curved edge at the front of the footprint, flanked on either side by two smaller lobes. White rhinos have two different species including northern and southern subspecies of white rhinos. The white rhinos are generally grazers and despite their name, white rhinos have a greyish color and they are different from one another because of the lip shape. The white rhino is considered the 2nd largest land animal after the African elephant. They move in groups with the younger rhinos while the male ones defend their territories from intruders. During the hot day, rhinos roll in the mud to cool themselves from the scourge of the African sun. Rhinos are more active during the cooler times of the day like in the morning times and late afternoon time. The rhinos tend to seek shelter from the heat of the sun and they stay hidden during the day making it difficult to be seen during tracking.Guidelines followed during the Rhino Tracking activity In Uganda:
- Driving around or bush walks without a guide is prohibited by the Zziwa Rhino sanctuary authorities.
- Littering rubbish or plastics like plastic water bottles, plastic bags, and also metallic materials is prohibited in the sanctuary
- Touching animals and also feeding them is strictly prohibited since they are not habituated and might attack you since they can see you as a threat.
- Jogging and cycling are also strictly prohibited in the park.
- Firearms are prohibited in the park and are to be withheld at the gate entrance.
- Sudden movements during the Rhino tracking activity are discouraged.
