Hiking Rwenzori Mountains National Park

Rwenzori Mountains National Park is located in South Western Uganda, Kasese town being the gateway to the park. The Rwenzori mountains also referred to as mountains of the moon are a UNESCO World Heritage site and the tallest horst mountain in Africa. Hiking Rwenzori Mountains National Park is the most popular and captivating hiking experience in Uganda. The Rwenzori Mountains offer great wilderness experiences with distinct types of vegetation, some rare endemic species of birds and animal life, waterfalls, and glaciers.

The Rwenzori mountain ranges incorporate different peaks; Margherita (5,109m) and Alexandra (5,083m) on Mount Stanley  In addition to Mount Stanley, there are four other glacial peaks in the Rwenzori: Mount Speke (4,890m), Mount Emin (4,791m), Mount Gessi (4,715m), and Mount Luigi da Savoia (4,627m). Traversing Rwenzori Mountains National Park can be done through 2 hiking circuits, the Southern circuit, and the Central circuit. The central circuit starts from the Nyakalengiya trailhead and the southern circuit starts from Kilembe. Whichever circuit you use, you will have extraordinary views of the mountain range. Hiking options range from 1 to 12 days and you must be physically fit to hike the Rwenzori mountains. The hike is not recommended if you have lung or heart problems. In order to have a successful Rwenzori hike, you should be well prepared and equipped with the right clothing. Make sure to carry with you warm clothing for the nights. Rain in the Rwenzori mountains is expected at all times of the year even during the dry months. The list of clothing to pack includes; a waterproof jacket and trousers, plastic bags to store both clean and dirty clothes and any other apparel, hiking/climbing boots, and snacks like chocolate. Walking sticks and any other gear can be hired and paid for by your operator.
