Gorilla Families in Uganda
Uganda is one of the leading East African countries renowned for being home to the endangered mountain gorillas. As one of the primary destinations for gorilla trekking, Uganda attracts travelers from around the world who come to marvel at these incredible creatures in their natural habitat.
The country’s conservation efforts have played a significant role in protecting and preserving this critically endangered species, making it a must-visit location for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers alike.
Gorilla trekking and habituation activities in Uganda are primarily conducted in two major destinations: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Together, these parks are home to 18 gorilla groups, but visitors can only track one family per day.

Rushegura Family

Oruzogo Family
The Oruzogo family is the largest gorilla group in Uganda, with a total of 25 members. Bitukura Family
The Bitukura family originally consisted of 24 individuals but now comprises 14 members. This family is led by Ndahura, who took over leadership from the retired silverback Karamuzi. Mubare Family
The Mubare family is recognized as the oldest habituated gorilla family in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, located in the Mubare Hills of the Buhoma sector. This family consists of 8 members, including 1 silverback, and offers visitors a glimpse into the deep-rooted history of gorilla conservation in Uganda. Nyakagezi Family
The Nyakagezi family is the only habituated gorilla group in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Originally led by Bugingo, who passed away due to old age, the family is now led by Mark, Bugingo’s eldest son. Mark is supported by two other silverbacks, Mathew and Mafia, who help maintain the family’s structure and leadership. This family provides a unique experience, as it resides in Mgahinga, a park known for its stunning volcanic landscapes and breathtaking views.
Habinyanja Family
The Habinyanja family was the first gorilla group to be habituated in Uganda, making it a significant part of the country’s gorilla conservation history. Visitors interested in spending a day with this family can head to the Buhoma sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, where the family resides. Nshongi Family
The Nshongi family is one of the 10 habituated gorilla families in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. For those who wish to spend a day with this group, you can find them in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi. The Nshongi family is known for its strong social bonds and diverse dynamics, offering visitors a fascinating experience during their trek.
Nkuringo Family
The Nkuringo Gorilla Group is located in the Nkuringo region of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, situated in the southwest of Uganda. The trek to reach the Nkuringo family offers visitors the chance to explore a variety of stunning attractions along the trails, enhancing the overall experience. Nkuringo’s rugged terrain and scenic views make it one of the most exciting and memorable family groups to visit.
