Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi> Masai Mara.
Transfer to Maasai Mara. After an early breakfast on the first day of your safari, your Jewel Safari guide will meet you at your hotel in Nairobi, debrief you about your safari before you start your Safari to Maasai Mara National Reserve. The route to the park crosses the Rift Valley with many spectacular views from the road. Along the rim, as you descend into the valley, you will find many handicraft workshops set up; an excellent opportunity to see some of the local handicrafts produced by the Maasai craftsmen.
Arrival time will be around noon; after checking into your accommodation, you will be served lunch; after which, your guide will take you on an afternoon game drive, which lasts 3-4 hours. These game drives are quite intense in Masai Mara as the variety and number of animals in the park are quite astounding. With a large number of predators in the park, seeing a “kill” is almost a certainty.
After the game drive, you will return to your accommodation for dinner and overnight in preparation for the next day’s activity.
Day 2: Maasai Mara.
You will have an early breakfast and go for a morning game drive. Many of the animals in the park are consistently easier to view in the mornings, before the heat of the day, when many of the species seek shelter from the sun.
Return to the lodge/ campsite for lunch and a little relaxation, after which you will be taken on a Balloon Ride to further explore Masai Mara; this time with a totally different perspective – a bird’s eye view. The silent balloon floats above the plains at an optimal distance for photographing the herds. ( this is optional)
Before nightfall, you will return to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Masai Mara > Lake Nakuru.
After breakfast, you will depart Maasai Mara and drive eastwards, back through the Rift Valley region of Central Kenya. You will notice the huge change in the topography and vegetation as you leave the Maasai Mara area. Lunch en route at a local Kenyan restaurant to experience traditional food.
After lunch, proceed to Lake Nakuru National Park to view the millions of flamingos as they gather at the shores of Lake Nakuru to feed. These flamingos are attracted by the algae in the lake, produced by their droppings. There are literally millions of flamingos and other water birds to see at the lake. Later, you will go on a game drive within the Lake Nakuru National Park and view the largest concentration of rhinos in East Africa, both Black and White Rhinos. Return to the lodge/ budgethotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Lake Nakuru > Amboseli.
After breakfast, you will drive back to Nairobi en route, you may stop at a local market or handicraft workshop. There are many along the way; a great opportunity to see what produce is grown in the Rift Valley area, which feeds most of Kenya.
On arrival in Nairobi, you will have lunch at The Carnivore Restaurant; famous for its barbequed game meats.
Upon entering the restaurant, you will see a chalkboard displaying the day’s catch, which can number over 25 varieties of game meat.
After lunch, you will drive to Amboseli National Park, home of the proud Masai Tribe and about 2,000 elephants. The park borders Tanzania; just south of the border is Mount Kilimanjaro. The views of Kilimanjaro from Amboseli are superb. After checking in at your hotel and a short rest, you will go on an afternoon game drive. Amboseli is most famous for its elephants, which seem to be everywhere as you move about the park. Before night falls, you will return to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.
Day 5: Amboseli National Park.
After breakfast, you will be taken on an all-day game drive in the park; lunch will be a picnic, served on a site overlooking Mount Kilimanjaro, which is just south of the park, on the Tanzanian side of the border. Besides elephants, there are many other large mammals, predators, as well as spectacular birdlife in the park. The dry lake bed of Lake Amboseli is quite large and a good place to see families of ostriches crossing the cracked floor bed. You will also visit the great swamp areas, where you will encounter large numbers of hippos in the water. In the late afternoon, you will return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 6: Amboseli > Nairobi.
You will have breakfast and start your drive back to Nairobi. En route, you will have the opportunity to stop and do some shopping at the Masai handicraft shops on the side of the road. Also, depending on the day of the week, your guide can take you to the Masai Market in Nairobi. There are many sights in Nairobi to visit, and your guide will gladly take you on a tour if time permits. Lunch will be served en route or in Nairobi.
Return to your hotel in Nairobi, or the airport depending on your onward schedule.
