Mahale Mountains National Park, spanning 1,600 square kilometers, is a breathtakingly beautiful and diverse landscape. The park’s dense jungle, which rises to 2,400 meters at its highest peak, is home to a variety of tree species, including nutmeg, mahogany, silk trees, and fig trees at lower elevations, while the upper slopes host pines, bamboo, and brittlewood.
Along with the chimpanzees, you’ll encounter squirrels, porcupines, antelopes, two types of mongoose, the yellow baboon, and the striking black-and-white colobus monkey. The park is also teeming with birdlife and vibrant butterflies.
Mahale is also home to Lake Tanganyika, the world’s second-deepest lake, with crystal-clear turquoise waters and white-sand beaches. The lake supports over 250 species of fish. During the dry season, the chimps often come close to the lakeshore or even venture into nearby camps. If you prefer a shorter walk to the rainforest, consider visiting between August and October, when the chimps are often easier to spot due to their proximity to the lake. But no matter when you visit, encountering the chimps is always a thrilling experience.
Wildlife
Mahale is home to around a thousand chimpanzees, spread across various groups. The Mimikire clan (or M-group), which has been studied by Japanese researchers for decades, is especially accustomed to human presence. This group of 56 chimps is so comfortable with people that they will often approach you and make eye contact.
During treks, you might witness chimps rushing through the forest on a hunt, communicating with loud shouts, or quietly grooming each other and foraging. Some chimps have even been seen using twigs to fish for termites. Watching the playful antics of the youngest members of the group is an unforgettable moment.
