1 Day Kampala City Tour Safari Overview

Jewel Safaris brings you a 1 Day Kampala City tour. Kampala is a very busy city known as the heart of Baganda and the capital city of Uganda. Kampala city is located an hour from Entebbe, where Uganda’s International Airport is located, as well as the official seat of the government-State House. Kampala is also the location of the Ugandan Parliament, foreign Embassies, and offices of various government departments. The city is not easy to traverse through since the roads are usually full of traffic and especially the main entry roads to the city. The city has several sites that can be visited including; religious sites, historical sites, cultural sites, and also local markets that sell both fresh and manufactured produce. The tour will expose you to several cuisines. Small and big restaurants and street vendors, offering international and local dishes. English is the official language in Uganda and is spoken widely in Kampala.

Brief itinerary

  • Day 1: Full day city tour

Detailed itinerary

After breakfast, you will be picked from the hotel either in Kampala or Entebbe and get a brief on the day’s activities. The tour will start with a visit to the Uganda Martyrs Basilica/Shrine in Namugongo. This is the place where 32 young men were burned to death by the Kabaka of Buganda then, Mwanga the II for their refusal to renounce Christianity. The martyrs shrine is located about an hour away from the city centre. 

You will then take a drive to the Bahai temple. While here, you will have an opportunity to learn about the Bahai faith and also get to sight some bird species around the calm environment. After this experience, you will take a short drive to the Uganda Museum located in Kamwokya, Kampala. The museum showcases Uganda’s history and the different cultural heritages in the country.

You will proceed to visit the Gaddafi Mosque, the largest mosque in Uganda and the headquarters of the Islamic faith in Uganda. Lunch will then be served at a local restaurant where you can choose to enjoy the delicacy of local Ugandan dishes like ‘Luwombo’.

After lunch, you will visit Owino Market, the largest covered market in East Africa.  Here the specialty is second-hand clothing but you will also find all other products found in other local markets.

After this market experience, you will visit Bulange, the parliament of Buganda kingdom, an ideal place to learn and experience Buganda’s history. The visit to Bulange can be summed up by visiting Lubiri, the traditional home of the king of Buganda, and also a visit to Kabaka’s lake, the largest man-made lake in Uganda. Bird species like little egrets can be sighted around the lake. 

Depending on the time you finish these activities, you can choose to visit more religious sites like; the Rubaga cathedral (parent cathedral for Roman Catholics) and the Namirembe cathedral (main Anglican place of worship).

As you end the tour, optional drop off at your hotel or at the airport for your flight.
