How is the weather in Uganda?
Uganda is located in the South-Eastern part of Africa crossed by the equator with a warm pleasant tropical climate throughout the whole year. It is therefore essential for one to be well informed about the weather when preparing for a safari to Uganda. The country is largely covered by water bodies like Lake Victoria, Lake George which influence the climate besides the landscape bringing rain at any time of the year.
Uganda’s weather varies with two different seasons and that is the rainy season and the dry season. The dry season in the months of December to February, June to July with less rain then the wet season in the months of September to November and March to May. The Northern area has 1 continuous wet season from March to November and a dry season from December to February.
The Rainy season
Uganda receives a lot of rainfall in the months of March, April, and May with daytime temperatures at about 28℃/82℉ and morning temperatures at 16℃/61℉. May is the coldest month. Places on higher altitudes like gorilla parks including Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park are colder and during the rainy season, it can be challenging to do gorilla trekking because of the muddy and slippery trails. It is therefore advised to plan your gorilla trekking safari during the dry season.
During the months of September to November, the rain is less with daytime temperatures of 28℃/82℉.
Be guided to dress up in warm clothes (long-sleeved shirts, trousers, and boots). These can also protect you from insect bites.
The Dry season
Uganda experiences dry weather conditions in the months of June, July, and August with June and July being the hottest and driest months especially in the southern area but rain can still be experienced in these areas since they are covered by rainforests. During the dry season, you will experience average temperatures of 16℃/61℉ in the morning and 27℃/81℉ in the afternoon. In Kidepo Valley National Park in the North, it is semi-arid and can experience droughts.
The South has less rainfall in the months of December, January, and February but it is more compared to June. The average daytime temperatures during these months are 28℃/82℉ with morning temperatures of 16℃/61℉.
Dress in light clothes during the day but warm clothes may be required for the cold night.
The dry season is the best time for wildlife viewing since animals are seen gathering at water sources within the national parks.
