Best time of the day for mountain gorilla trekking in Uganda
Mountain gorillas are Uganda’s foremost attraction and mountain gorilla trekking is on top of the bucket-list of every traveler to Uganda. In Uganda, these gentle giants can only be seen in two tropical rainforest parks of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park since they cannot survive in captivity. These two mountain gorilla trekking destinations combined provide 5 tracking sectors or head trails which are: Buhoma, Rushaga, Ruhija, Nkuringo in Bwindi and Ntebeko trailhead in Mgahinga.
Because of it’s incredible biodiversity, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the best mountain gorilla trekking destination in Uganda. Bwindi alone is a sanctuary to 19 habituated gorilla families whereas the second gorilla park (Mgahinga) is a haven for one habituated gorilla family.
With 22 habituated gorilla families in the two gorilla parks combined, over 175 gorilla trekking permits are available on a daily. Visitors on a gorilla trekking safari in Uganda have to report at the visitor centre before 08:00am for a briefing about the rules and regulations of gorilla trekking activity. After the briefing, trekkers will be put in small controlled groups of up-to 8 tourists. In their company will also be an experienced tracker/guide , and two other armed rangers to guarantee safety from any potential danger in these untamed territories.
08:00am is usually the best trekking time because it is during this time that you will catch these gentle giants foraging before the heat of the day sets in. Gorilla trekking also being a strenuous activity, starting the trek by 08:00am is ideal because of the cool and gentle breeze that keeps the trekkers energized.
