Ajai wildlife reserve is located in North Eastern Uganda in the district of Arua on the west bank of the Nile. Ajai was first established as a white rhino sanctuary in 1962 to protect the rhinos that are now extinct to the reserve and later gazetted as a game reserve in 1965.The reserve is dominated by papyrus swamps, savannah woodlands and grassy floodplains with a presence of animal species such as Uganda kobs, warthogs, leopard, olive baboons, Sitatunga, common duicker, waterbucks, hippos and several others. There are also several bird species that can be spotted in the reserve while on a bird watching safaris in Uganda.Uganda Wildlife Authority privatized the reserve and it is under the management of Uganda Safari Company that operates sport hunting trips and photographic safaris in the reserve.
Best time to visit Ajai Wildlife Reserve
The reserve is open to visit all year but the dry season is the best time in the months of December to early March and June to October.Ajai wildlife reserve tends to receive heavy rainfall in the months of April, May then October and November. Therefore you are advised to pack the right clothing for this weather in case you intend to visit during the rainy season.

The reserve can be accessed by both road and airThe road drive to reach to Ajai wildlife game reserve will take you approximately 6 hours from Kampala to Arua.The park can also be accessed by a scheduled or chartered flight to Arua airfield where you will be transferred by road to the reserve.
