When is the Best Time to Go to Zimbabwe?

The ideal time to visit Zimbabwe for game viewing is during the dry winter season, which runs from May to October. This period features mild temperatures, minimal rainfall, and a low risk of malaria. However, keep in mind that September and October can become extremely hot and dry. If you’re looking to experience Victoria Falls at its most dramatic, plan your trip at the end of the summer rainy season, between April and May, when the Falls are in full flood.

Traveling to Zimbabwe from January to March

January

January is a rainy month and wildlife is harder to spot at this time of year in the dense bush, but you can take advantage of lower rates and fewer crowds – keeping in mind that this is low-water season for Victoria Falls.

February

February is rainy and wet. The water level of the Zambezi River is high, which means that Victoria Falls is in full flow but due to the amount of mist and spray, it may obscure views of this majestic landmark. If you do decide to visit then, consider a helicopter ride or a microlight flight to truly appreciate the sheer size of the Falls.

March

If you’re planning to visit Zimbabwe in March you can expect warm, humid weather with frequent afternoon thundershowers – these are usually short bursts that last a few hours. Water levels are perfect for viewings of Victoria Falls, especially seeing the gorges that surround this phenomenal attraction as well as the famous spray rainbows.

Traveling to Zimbabwe in June & July

June

June is widely regarded as the best time for a safari in Zimbabwe. During the dry season, natural waterholes diminish, drawing massive herds to lakes, rivers, and man-made water sources. This is an excellent month for rhino tracking at Matobo Hills and witnessing giant elephant herds in Hwange National Park.

July

Winter takes hold in July, bringing colder nights and crisp early mornings. Be sure to pack extra layers for game drives, as temperatures can drop significantly. Wildlife viewing remains superb, and this month is ideal for embarking on a canoe safari, offering a unique perspective on Zimbabwe’s incredible landscapes and wildlife.

August

August brings bright, clear days with virtually no clouds, creating an ideal climate for wildlife viewing. As the heart of the dry season, it’s one of the best months for a Zimbabwe safari, though camps in game reserves tend to fill up quickly. This is also considered the prime time for white-water rafting at Victoria Falls. The low-water season begins, reducing the water’s volume and speed, exposing rapids for thrilling adventures.

September

September marks the annual game count in Hwange National Park, a major event on Zimbabwe’s calendar. Hwange, the country’s largest game reserve, is home to diverse vegetation and abundant wildlife. This once-a-year opportunity lets visitors join local rangers at watering holes to observe and count animals, offering a unique and immersive safari experience.

Visiting Zimbabwe from October to December

October

October is Zimbabwe’s hottest month, as the days heat up and the dry season nears its end. Despite the changing season, wildlife sightings remain excellent, particularly for elephant viewing, as herds gather around watering holes during this time.

November

November’s climate is unpredictable. If the rains arrive late, October’s dryness and heat may linger. If they arrive on time, the month can be very wet, marking the start of Zimbabwe’s spring. This is a quieter travel period, making it ideal for birdwatching as thousands of migratory birds arrive with the rains. Many safari lodges offer expert guides who can help visitors identify both migratory and resident species, often spotting over 50 species before breakfast!

December

December ushers in summer rains and lush landscapes, creating a perfect backdrop for birdwatching. However, we don’t recommend visiting Victoria Falls during this month, as the water flow is reduced to a trickle. A major advantage of traveling to Zimbabwe in December is the peaceful atmosphere, with quieter lodges and game parks allowing for a more intimate safari experience.
