Overview
5 days Nyungwe Forest Chimpanzee Safari is a private Rwanda takes you a Rwanda safari experience to one of the oldest rainforests in Africa, Nyungwe Forest is also the largest forest in Rwanda located in western region of the country.
The park is dominated by a series of mountains originating in northern Uganda and Congo and runs south through the Rwenzori Mountains, western Rwanda and Burundi to the shores of Lake Tanganyika.
Nyungwe Forest National Park is home to 13 primates namely Chimpanzees, Silver monkey, Golden monkey, Owl-faced monkey/ Hamlyn’s monkey, Grey-cheeked mangabey, Red-tailed monkey, L’Hoest’s monkey, Vervet monkey, Olive baboon, Dent’s Mona Monkey, Blue Monkey and Angolan Colobus Monkeys.
This safari starts and ends in Kigali City – the capital of Rwanda.

Detailed itinerary of 5 days Nyungwe Forest Chimpanzee Safari
Day 1: Arrival, Kigali City
On arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be welcomed, meet and greet by your private driver – guide and after a short briefing session, you will drive to Kigali City. Depending on your arrival time, you will have a Kigali city visit the genocide memorial site, art and craft center and other amazing sites.
Have dinner and stay overnight at hotel in Kigali City.

Day 2: transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park
Wake up to melodic sounds of Kigali City, have breakfast then checkout and depart for Nyungwe Forest National Park with a drive through Rwanda’s most beautiful countryside dotted with calming nature scenery.
This drive is approximately 5 hours with stops a local market, the traditional palace in Nyanza, the Botanical Gardens in Butare and the cultural museum. Continue to Nyungwe Forest passing through stunning green fields of tea scattered across the hillsides and local communities around Nyungwe Forest. On arrival, you will check into the lodge, have dinner and stay overnight.

Day 3: Nature in Nyungwe Forest
After breakfast you will head to Nyungwe Forest where you will spend a full day enjoy nature of the forest. Nyungwe Forest has a number of well-maintained trails running through the lush, green valley of the equatorial forest.
You will spend the whole day hiking through the forest, have picnic lunch set in the middle of the forest offering you a great opportunity to bond with nature more.
Nyungwe Forest National Park is the most important area of biodiversity in Rwanda with about 1000 plant species, 13 species of primates, 75 species of others, about 275 species of birds and 120 species of butterflies.
After spending a full day in Nyungwe Forest, you will return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4: Chimpanzee Tracking in Nyungwe Forest
Have an early breakfast and head to Nyungwe Forest for chimpanzee tracking experience, you will join other trekkers for briefing at the park headquarters. After registering for the experience, you will be assigned in groups of 8 people and be assigned a chimpanzee group/sector to trek then head into the forests looking for that particular family.
Chimpanzee trekking experience takes approximately 2 to 6 hours depending on the movement of the chimpanzee group you are trekking and where they spent the previous night, the chimpanzees keep moving, making noise, grooming and stopping for snacks or nap.
With a help and guidance of the park guide, you will be allowed to spend one hour in their presence while watching them swing from one tree branch to another, grooming each other and picking fruits among others. You can also take pictures.
After the experience, you will head back to the park’s headquarters to pick your chimpanzee trekking certificates, head to the lodge for lunch and short rest. Later in the afternoon you will go for canopy walk on a high suspended metallic bridge above the forest canopy, the canopy walkway has been named the World’s best forest canopy walkway. While on the walkway, you will enjoy aerial views of the forest, many birds and primates such as olive baboons among others.
Return to the lodge for rest, have evening and stay overnight.

Day 5: Drive back to Kigali City
After breakfast, you will checkout of the lodge and drive back to Kigali while enjoy the vibrant views of the countryside of Rwanda, the drive is approximately 5 hours and when you arrive in the city, you will be dropped off either at the hotel or at airport for your departure flight back home.
