Track Kahungye gorilla family in Rushaga Sector, Bwindi
Kahungye Gorilla family is situated in the Rushaga sector of South of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and the only sector where gorilla habituation experiences take place. The name of the gorilla family “Kahungye” was derived from a hill where the family was first sighted. Kahungye gorilla family was opened for gorilla trekking in 2011 but it later split and a new group was formed known as Busingye gorilla family. Kahungye gorilla family has 13 members dominated by a silverback “’Gwigi”, a local word to mean door. However the numbers keep changing due to certain factors such as members leaving the group, death and new members joining the family.Apart from Kahungye gorilla family, there are other habituated gorilla families in the Rushaga sector and these include; Nshongi, Mishaya, Bweza and Busingye.
Rushaga sector has the highest number of habituated gorilla families compared to other sectors and therefore it has the highest number of gorilla permits in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park.
