Kalinzu Forest – Chimp tracking
Kalinzu forest Chimpanzee Trekking : Kalinzu forest is located in Bushenyi district along the Mbarara – Kasese highway in western Uganda. Kalinzu forest is managed by National Forestry Authority (NFA) and it is the second-best location for chimpanzee tracking after Kibale National Park.
Kalinzu forest is inhabited by a wide variety of wildlife species such as birds, butterflies, moths, and primates like black and white colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys, baboons, blue monkeys, and red-tailed monkeys.
Kalinzu forest is in close proximity with Queen Elizabeth National Park and Maramagambo forest. The main activity at Kalinzu forest is chimpanzee trekking. Chimpanzee trekking in Kalinzu forest can be combined with a wildlife safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park and also a gorilla trekking safari to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
The activity of chimpanzee trekking starts with a briefing and takes about 3-4 hours once located, you are allowed one hour to take photos, watch them feed, play, and also observe their different behavior. The success rate of sighting chimpanzees is very high compared to its neighbor Kyambura gorge and an early start gives good sightings of the chimpanzees. There are four different trails in Kalinzu forest that facilitate the activities like chimpanzee trekking, nature walks, and bird watching. These include; River trail, Palm trail, Valley trail, and waterfall trail.
Besides chimpanzee trekking, there are several other interesting activities to engage in and some of these include; butterfly identification, nature walks, bird watching, and identification of various tree species.
The best time to visit Kalinzu forest for chimpanzee trekking and other activities is during the dry season when the trails are dry and easier to navigate.
