Lola Ya Bonobo, located just outside Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is the world’s only sanctuary dedicated exclusively to the care and conservation of bonobos. Founded in 1994 by Claudine André, the sanctuary plays a vital role in protecting this endangered species, which is native only to the Congo Basin. Bonobos, often referred to as “pygmy chimpanzees,” are known for their peaceful and cooperative behavior, making them unique among primates.
Purpose and Mission
The sanctuary provides a safe space for bonobos rescued from poachers and illegal wildlife trafficking. Many of the animals brought to Lola Ya Bonobo are orphans, their mothers killed for bushmeat or captured for sale. Once at the sanctuary, the bonobos undergo a process of physical and emotional rehabilitation. They are cared for in a nurturing environment that mimics their natural habitat, allowing them to recover and socialize with other bonobos.
